SC Millenium Review of (4)Cyclone:

Map Name: Cyclone
Map Size: 192x192
Map Tileset: Jungle Terrain
Maximum Amount of Players: 4
Download: Made by {Frost}Entity Download

When I first downloaded the map I thought ack an island map, my worst fear but I started to play the map and it was actually quite fun, {Frost}Entity's map skills have come a long way from his original {Frost}MicroJail.

General Description:

The one thing that surprised me the most about the map was the starting positions. Each base started in a corner but not directly into the corner off to the side, or down a bit it, so the map wasn't congruent and it wasn't unbalanced. Another great feature was the amount of expansions and islands. Most island maps have few expansions this map had over 18 expansions making it a good challenge for players.

Good Points:

  • The map contained an equal amount of water and land that allowed for land attacks and air attacks {I found land attacks difficult, but, many find them easier on an island map}.
  • This map had an "original" layout {except for the name} it swirled towards the center not out from the center {Blizzard's Cyclone made a fan shape}.
  • The map was very creative it contained different layouts, styles, shapes, it wasn't a huge rectangular prism with 20, 50 000 in your base. It was a very enjoyable map.
Bad Points:

  • The map had a lot of doodads which I normally like but Cyclone contained then in big clumps of areas which was unneeded and took up extra space. Doodads are generally better evened out, not in clumps.
  • Another thing was the lack of critters. Critters seem unimportant but critters are the "icing" on a map. They had interest, tactics {mind control}, and a little fun. The only critters I could find were in the center of the map that was a real hit down on the interest of the map.
  • The map was too big for a 4 player's map {192x192} the map would have been much better at 128x128 {but that would cut down on expansions}. A major error in the map was the amount of minerals in your main base, 8 mineral patches each with 2000 minerals plus there was 8 at your expansion {standard} this was too many minerals for a main and an expansion. It allows players to "turtle" which is a bad part for newbies trying to learn the game.
  • There was an unbalance in the map if player 2 {blue} or the player in the top right side wanted to add a comsat or a nuclear silo to his command center it would block off his gas. The gas should be moved up / or down a bit to prevent this imbalance. Also player 1 in the top left hand corner his gas is located farther from the command center/ nexus / hatchery then the other players.
General Strategies:

Island maps are my worst type of map, {Loophole proved that} but I developed a few strategies that are easy to execute and can be very sufficient to winning the game.

Terran:
In most island maps many Zerg or Protoss players will tech up, terran has the lift off advantage. In the beginning lift off your barracks (make a couple) and fly them to a nearby base. It may take some time before they reach there but it can be a promising tactic for taking out the mineral line.

Protoss:
None at this time. Generally go with corsairs (early overlord hunting :-)) and try a mixture between Corsairs, Scouts, Carriers and Arbiters. It is extremely effective.

Zerg:
Scourge here will be your best friend. You can take out early Protoss air, hunt down other overlords and take out terran wraiths with ease. Again use a mixture between Guardians, Devourers, Mutas and scourge. If you opponents are going heavy air don't go with the Guardians just Devs/Mutas. Make the Guardians after his air defense is destroyed.

Conclusion:

A good map with a few imbalances and errors. I do recommend you play this map at least once, but, islands maps aren't exactly popular. This is a huge improvement from FrostMicroJail and FrostTemple. Also to improve the map if you added bridges between each islands it could be a giant bridge to bridge land map.

Ratings:

Layout: 6.5/10 good layout
Interest: 4/10 Needs more critters and elminate the "clumps"
General Design: 4.5/10 A few imbalances but generally a great design
Overall: 5/10
